Model Mama | Kelly Davies-Green
...talks balancing business and babies & the importance of "me" time.
The balance of raising 3 kids, a marriage and her Australian fashion label Maurie and Eve [which she co-founded with Maya Clemmensen & Scott Davies] is no mean feat! But our next Model Mama, Northern Beaches beach babe, Kelly Davies-Green, is learning to take it in her stride.
We chatted to Kelly about her family, her business, the 'tribe' it takes to help her balance being both mother and lover and how she maintains her health and wellbeing on a daily basis by making time for her and not sweating the small stuff.
Born: Ballina • Raised: Northern Beaches, Sydney • Star Sign: Leo • Lives: Northern Beaches, Sydney • Nickname: Kel, Bear - my parents started calling me Bear when I was little, they still do today • Significant others: Husband, Jeremy, daughter Bowie (9), son Ryder (6), daughter Tavi (2)
[I'm] a very blessed mother of 3, married to a man who lights up my soul. I apply empathy, determination and thoughtfulness to everything I do.
The mama radar.
Was motherhood always on my radar? Absolutely! For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be a Mum. My husband and I knew from early on in our relationship that we shared a desire to be parents together.
I imagined motherhood to be exactly the way my life is today, happy and fulfilled, but it has taken me years to find the flow.
In the beginning, there were so many surprises! We had Bowie when I was 25 and the first year of her life was overwhelming and a real shock to the system. She practically lived off my boob and didn’t sleep a night in her cot until she was 15 months old. Initially the lack of sleep hit hard but now looking back I wouldn’t change a thing. I love the way motherhood has taught me patience. Now, as my children are getting older, I can appreciate how fast times goes. So I have learnt not to sweat the small stuff and try and soak up all those day to day moments.
The balance of Mother & Lover.
I’ve always been the mothering type, the carer, the nurturer. Becoming a mother and being responsible for these incredible little people has truly made me want to be the best person I can be. I have grown so much over the past 9 years because of the lessons that being a mother has taught me.
Juggling a career, 3 kids and trying to find time to be a lover is hard but Jez and I always find the little moments throughout the week to connect and that keeps our foundation strong. We are blessed to have grandparents close by who are happy and eager to help whenever we feel like we need a spontaneous date night together.
From mama to Maurie and Eve and back.
I am a self motivator, hard worker and have wonderful business partners and amazing staff which make the day to day craziness a little easier. Being organized is paramount in both my professional and personal life or everything just falls apart. I am a high achiever in all aspects of my life and at times this doesn’t serve me well as I am always striving for the unrealistic goal of perfection.
I’ve always wanted to be the one to drop my kids to school, pick them up in the afternoons and tuck them into bed at night. I have to work incredibly hard to make sure I can do that! As with many working mums workdays are 24/7 with 9-5 no longer being the norm. Somedays are amazing and everything just flows beautifully and you tick everything off your to do list without work having to eat into family time. Then there are those days when I have emails and phone calls coming at me at 6pm whilst cooking dinner, helping with homework, packing school lunches for the next day all with a toddler on my hip.
Take care of you, the family will prosper.
It’s so overwhelming, all the advice new mama’s receive. When it came down to it, I just trusted my instincts.
I read so much about sleep routines and settling techniques but ended up figuring out what worked best for my babies. Each one of them were so different to the other, we were constantly reminded of their individuality.
Motherhood can be absolutely exhausting and trying at times so taking care of yourself is so important. It took me years to prioritise “me” time but I remind myself often that I must take good care of myself in order to take good care of my family.
Putting "me" time into practice.
I wake up between 5:30 - 6am and have a warm glass of water, I take my Chinese herbs and diffuse an up lifting morning blend of essential oils.
I like feeling good, and I know I feel my best when I take care of my body and my mind so 3 mornings a week I do yoga and reformer pilates and am home before the kids are out of bed. From 7:30am onwards its go time getting everyone breakfast, packing school bags and getting myself ready for work.
Everyday I stay hydrated with 2-3 litres of water. Daily movement and some form of exercise are critical for my mind and to help manage the madness.
I always look for natural solutions and incorporate Essential Oils, Chinese herbs and Acupuncture to support me physically, mentally and spiritually.
I am a lot more sun conscious these days. I wish I looked after my skin, the way I do now, when I was in my twenties.
